Update: High surf advisory canceled for north and west shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau
Update at 3:30 p.m. March 1: The National Weather Service in Honolulu reports surf along north and west shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau has fallen below advisory levels as the northwest swell moving through the islands continues to decline.
Therefore, the high surf advisory that was in place until 6 p.m. today for those shorelines is canceled.
Original post from 5:11 a.m. Saturday, March 1: National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu canceled the high surf warning that was in effect through this morning for the north and west shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau.
The warning was replaced with a high surf advisory now in place until 6 p.m. today as a large northwest swell that advanced through the islands and peaked Friday is expected to gradually decline throughout the day and the rest of the weekend.
Surf along north shores of both islands is forecast at 15 to 20 feet this morning, falling to 10 to 15 feet by this afternoon. Breakers along west shores are expected to be 10 to 14 feet to start the day before declining to 6 to 9 feet by this afternoon.
Strong breaking waves and strong currents along those shores will make swimming and other ocean activities dangerous.
The public is urged to heed all advice from ocean safety officials if they plan activities on any of the shorelines in the advisory areas.
Remember: When in doubt, don’t go out.
