79-year-old Kekaha man in critical condition after bicycle he was riding struck by truck
A 79-year-old Kekaha man is in critical condition after being struck by a truck on Kaumuali‘i Highway while riding a bicycle the morning of Feb. 27 in Kekaha.
Kauaʻi police responded to the incident that happened at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday.
A 2007 Toyota truck was traveling west on Kaumuali‘i Highway when the bicyclist, who was also heading west and not wearing a helmet, veered into the roadway and his bicycle was struck by the front passenger side of the truck, causing him to sustain serious injuries.
The 79-year-old man was transported to Wilcox Medical Center in Līhuʻe critical condition.
The 47-year-old Kapa‘a man driving the truck was uninjured and stayed at the scene and fully cooperated with police.
Kaumuali‘i Highway was closed in both directions for about 1 and a half hours as officers with the Kauaʻi Police Department Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation. Traffic was diverted to ‘Elepaio Road.
The investigation is ongoing. Speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the incident.
