Update: Driver involved in hit-and-run that critically injured 30-year-old man arrested

Update at 11:05 a.m. Feb. 14: Kaua‘i police found an unattended vehicle and its driver thought to be involved in a hit-and-run traffic collision the night of Feb. 12 on Nāwiliwili Road in Līhu‘e that critically injured a 30-year-old man.

Officers located and took into custody 54-year-old Salvin Hilario, who has no permanent address, at about 8:30 p.m. Feb. 13.

Hilario was arrested for:

  • First-degree negligent injury.
  • Leaving the scene of a collision with serious bodily injury.
  • Driving without a valid driver’s license.
  • Reckless driving.
  • Inattention to driving.

He is detained in the Kaua‘i Police Department cellblock.

The 30-year-old pedestrian struck in the collision remains in critical condition at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

Kaua‘i Police Department thanks the public for its vigilance and support in providing information to aid the investigation into the hit-and-run collision.

Original post at 9:40 a.m. Feb. 13: Kaua‘i police are searching for the driver of a vehicle that struck a 30-year-old man the night of Feb. 12 on Nāwiliwili Road in Līhu‘e.

The driver of the unknown vehicle did not stop to help the pedestrian and left the scene of the crash prior to first responders arriving.

The hit-and-run collision happened sometime about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday near Nokekula Street while the pedestrian was in the southbound lane of Nāwiliwili Road. The 30-year-old was transported to Wilcox Medical Center in Līhu‘e following the collision and later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he remains in critical condition.

Make, model and other information about the vehicle involved are unknown at this time.

Nāwiliwili Road was closed for about an hour and a half while the Kaua‘i Police Department Traffic Safety Section investigated at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.

Drivers who were traveling on Nāwiliwili Road between 8 and 9 p.m. Wednesday and anyone who might have witnessed the collision or has additional information is urged to call Officer Himongala at 808-241-1617.
