Bicyclist in critical condition after being hit by vehicle on Kūhiō Highway
A 44-year-old bicyclist is in critical condition after being hit by a car Christmas evening while crossing Kūhiō Highway in Kapa‘a.
Kauaʻi police report that a 2008 Toyota sedan was traveling north at about 6:50 p.m. Wednesday on Kūhiō Highway when it struck the man while he was crossing the highway with his bicycle in a marked crosswalk at the intersection with Kawaihau Road.
The bicyclist was transported to Wilcox Medical Center in Līhuʻe. He was later airlifted to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he remains in critical condition.
The driver of the Toyota was uninjured.
Kūhiō Highway was closed in both directions for about 90 minutes as officers with the Kauaʻi Police Department Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
Speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology results are pending.
