Rubbish on the Garden Isle increases by 25% between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That’s an extra 60 tons per day during the holidays.

Items such as boxes, wrapping paper, plastic bags, food packaging, live Christmas trees and decorations, plus more, definitely add up.

So the Kaua‘i County Solid Waste Division is reminding residents and visitors to be mindful of the waste generated during the holiday season.

Customers are encouraged to recycle accepted materials at recycling sites around the island.

If the recycle bins are full when you arrive, come back later.

Do not leave recyclables on the ground. They can become windblown, wet and unrecyclable.

If you purchased a live Christmas tree, be sure to remove all decorations and the stand before bringing it to one of the county transfer station’s green waste drop-off areas or Kaua‘i Nursery & Landscape Landscaping on Kaumuali‘i Highway in Puhi.
