Firefighters battle blaze at unoccupied dwelling unit in Kalihiwai
Kaua‘i firefighters extinguished a structure fire that broke out early Friday morning at a home on Kalihiwai Valley Road in Kalihiwai.
Firefighters were dispatched at about 4:40 a.m. to reports of a possible shed on fire and upon their arrival discovered a dwelling unit separate from the main home fully engulfed in flames.
First responders quickly gained control of the blaze using tank water, and then used a nearby stream to set up a pump to fully extinguish the blaze.
The structure was unoccupied with no electrical power.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters from the Hanalei, Kaiākea and Kapa‘a fire stations responded to the incident, along with Rescue 3, the on-duty battalion chief and Kaua‘i Fire Prevention Bureau.
Kaua‘i Fire Prevention Bureau inspectors estimate damage to the structure and its contents to be roughly $100,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
