Approximately 15,000 gallons of wastewater spilled into the Hanamāʻulu Stream after a sewer line broke on Tuesday night.

Kaua‘i County officials were notified of the spill at around 7:40 p.m. in Hanamāʻulu, on Hanamāʻulu Road at the Anai Street intersection. Officials say wastewater spilled and flowed into Hanamāʻulu Stream before bypass pumping began.

The Wastewater Management Division will continue to bypass the broken sewer line until it is repaired. County officials are asking the public to avoid this area if possible.

State of Hawaiʻi Department of Health officials have been notified about the spill. Anyone with questions can contact Jason Kagimoto with the Department of Public Works at 808-241-4083 or via email at [email protected].
