Synopsis

Gradually strengthening trade winds will become locally breezy by the weekend, delivering just a few showers, mainly to windward areas.

Discussion

Persistent troughing far N of the islands will continue to gradually diminish, allowing a pair of surface high pressure centers to consolidate over the weekend. End result will be strengthening trade winds, becoming locally breezy later today into Saturday, then persisting into the middle of next week. Atmospheric stability will remain high, so any showers arriving on the trades will be brief, and favor windward areas during nights and mornings. Moisture associated with a weak tropical disturbance passing far S of the islands may bring increased showers Sunday night and Monday, mainly to the Big Island.

Aviation

Moderate to locally breezy trades expected through the weekend. Low cigs and SHRA should be confined to windward and mauka locations. Brief MVFR conds can be expected in SHRA. VFR conds should generally prevail.
No AIRMETs currently in effect.

Marine

Moderate to locally strong winds will fill in today then persist into the weekend as a broad high develops over much of the central and eastern half of the Pacific. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) for the typically windy waters around Maui County and the Big Island has been issued through the weekend. The high pressure will meander just north-northeast of the state through the first half of next week that may keep SCA conditions in place through this time.
Tiny surf along north facing shores will linger through today as a short period north swell fades. Mostly flat conditions will return tonight then hold through the first half of next week. Surf along east facing shores will gradually become rough and choppy today. Near seasonal average surf will return for east facing shores over the weekend and persist through the first half of next week as trades build locally and upstream. A mix of background southwest and southeast swells will produce small surf for south facing shores over the next few days. No signs of any forerunners from a new small, long period south-southwest swell at the offshore buoys early this morning. Thus, have delayed the onset to later this afternoon and evening. This new swell should refresh some small surf along south facing shores over the weekend with a gradual downtrend early next week.
