Hanalei turns out to welcome Hōkūleʻa on first stop of Pae ‘Āina Statewide Sail

A fanfare of 100-plus people lined Hanalei Pier to greet legendary voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa as the traditional Polynesian double-hulled vessel and its crew arrived at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday after a 21-hour sail from Sand Island, Oʻahu.

The crowd welcoming the canoe included original Hōkūleʻa crew member John Kruse of Kauaʻi, keiki and hula hālau.

Hanalei is the first stop on the Pae ‘Āina Statewide Sail. During the next 2 weeks, the Hōkūleʻa crew will host canoe tours and activities for hundreds of school students and the community while docked in Hanalei and Nāwiliwili.

Hōkūleʻa’s sail to Hanalei was captained by Tamiko Fernelius with a crew of 9, including Jonah Apo, Kai Hoshijo, Solomon Kaupu, Kanako Uchino Dumaran, Tehinamai Tafiti, Mahinalani Cavalieri, Leilani Aldrich, Shoko Ogata and Hōkū Pihana.

Escort boat Kōlea was captained by Noland Keaulana and crewed by Allen Mozo and Jordan Jacobson.

After Hanalei and Nāwiliwili, the next stop scheduled on the Pae ‘Āina Statewide Sail is Haleʻiwa, O‘ahu.

The 7-month voyage around the Hawaiian Islands will cover 3,000 miles, stopping at 31 ports and reaching 34 communities, before Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia resume the Moananuiākea Circumnavigation of the Pacific in March 2025.
