Hōkūleʻa slated to launch Friday afternoon for Kaua‘i, kicking off Pae ‘Āina Statewide Sail

After a one-day delay due to weather, legendary voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa is now expected to depart Sand Island, Oʻahu today and sail to Hanalei, Kauaʻi, in its first stop on the Pae ‘Āina Statewide Sail.

While on Kauaʻi, the Hōkūleʻa crew will host canoe tours and activities for schools and the community while docked in Hanalei and Nāwiliwili.

The voyaging canoe and crew are expected to depart from O‘ahu at 1 p.m., weather permitting. They are slated to arrive at approximately 10 a.m. on Saturday in Hanalei Pier.

These stops in Kaua‘i will kick off the crew’s seven-month Pae ‘Āina Statewide Sail throughout the Hawaiian Islands before Hōkūleʻa and Hikianalia resume the Moananuiākea Circumnavigation of the Pacific in March 2025. 

The voyage around the Hawaiian Islands will cover 3,000 miles, stopping at 31 ports and reaching 34 communities.

Hōkūleʻa crew will host public events Saturday through Aug. 29. Events are subject to change depending on the weather.

While docked at Hanalei Pier, the crew will offer tours on the following days:

• Saturday: 2-5 p.m.
• Sunday: 10 a.m. to noon; 1-4 p.m.
• Aug. 19 to 21: 4-7 p.m.
• Aug. 19 to 22: 9 a.m. to noon is reserved for school tours.

The voyaging canoe will also dock at Nāwiliwili Small Boat Harbor on Aug. 24 at approximately 10 a.m., weather permitting.

The public can come check out the vessel on the following days:

• Aug. 24: Noon to 4:30 p.m.
• Aug. 25: 10 a.m. to noon; and 1-4 p.m.
• Aug. 26-29: 4-7 p.m.; 9 a.m. to noon is reserved for school tours.
