KPD Monitoring 1K People in Quarantine, Mayor Reports
Kaua‘i continued its one-week streak of no new COVID-19 cases as of Friday, with one case active and in isolation. The county has a cumulative total of 56 cases.
During Friday’s COVID-19 daily briefing, Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami said Kaua‘i Police Department is monitoring more than 1,300 people in quarantine. Since the start of the pandemic, more than 70 people have been arrested for violating the state’s 14-day mandatory quarantine, that has been in place since March 26.
Gov. David Ige reinstated a 14-day inter-island quarantine on Aug. 11 after coronavirus cases began surging on O‘ahu.
“Our county has committed significant resources to tracking airline passenger arrivals,” Kawakami said Friday. “We believe that our level of precaution is helping to keep our COVID-19 numbers low.”
The county has a robust system in place to track individuals coming to the Garden Island. With police and National Guard at Līhu‘e Airport, all arrivals are required to fill out forms documenting where they will be staying during their visit.
The mayor said the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau calls visitors daily to check on those in quarantine. Additionally, KPD makes regular in-person visits to ensure they are not violating the governor’s mandate.
