Update: High surf advisory extended for north and west shorelines of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau

3:38 p.m. Jan. 31 update: A high surf advisory has been extended till 4 a.m. Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a northwest 310 -to 320-degree swell will continue to produce advisory-level surf for exposed north- and west-facing shores tonight though surf heights will gradually diminish below advisory levels for most shores by early Thursday.

Surf of 10 to 15 feet along north-facing shores and 8 to 12 feet along exposed west-facing shores is expected.

Original post: A high surf advisory is issued for north- and west-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau till 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, several pulses of west-northwest – at 300 degrees – swell will arrive over the next couple of days. A medium-period swell peaking today will lead to high surf and then briefly diminish overnight. A more significant swell will bring even larger surf on Tuesday.

Surf of 12 to 18 feet is expected along north-facing shores, and 8 to 12 feet along west-facing shores today.

This advisory will likely be expanded in area later today, to include portions of Maui and the Big Island in anticipation of rising surf later Tuesday.

Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous.
