Kaua‘i police warn public to lock their vehicles after recent rash of car break-ins

The Kaua‘i Police Department is urging residents and visitors to be more vigilant of suspicious activity after a recent rash of car break-ins and thefts have occurred in residential neighborhoods islandwide.

“In recent reports, subjects are targeting unsecured vehicles,” said Acting Capt. Kennison Nagahisa of the Investigative Services Bureau. “They are quietly going through neighborhoods and checking for unlocked vehicles for an easy opportunity to steal valuables.”

Nagahisa recommends locking all doors to your vehicles and your residence. Avoid leaving any valuables in your vehicles or in plain view from the outside. Additionally, the public is advised to be more observant of suspicious activity and any unfamiliar vehicles or persons in their neighborhoods.

“It is very difficult to have officers everywhere at all times,” said Capt. Nagahisa. “So, it is important that we remain vigilant, and by doing so we can help deter crime in our own neighborhoods and communities.”
