Grove Farm Museum is celebrating Kaua‘i planter Paul Isenberg’s birthday with a free ‘Ohana Train Day.
It will be held on Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Locomotive Learning Park on Haleko Road (across from the old Līhu‘e mill) and at Grove Farm Museum on Nawiliwili Road – both in Līhu‘e.
Born in Hanover, Germany on April 13, 1837, Paul Isenberg came to the Hawaiian Islands in 1858. He became a prominent early Kaua‘i sugar planter and was the owner of Kōloa and Līhu‘e Sugar plantations. Isenberg was a main advocate for a plantation railroad and Paulo, the 1887 steam locomotive, was named for him.
At the Locomotive Learning Park, visitors will be able to take a narrated train ride along an historic locomotive right of way in one of Grove Farm’s replica can cars, pulled by a vintage diesel locomotive. There will also be toy model train exhibits.
Self-guided tours will be offered at Grove Farm Museum. In addition, there will be a “live stream” model train as well as electric model train exhibits.
Also at the museum, Paulo the locomotive will be on static display so you can get a close up look at this unique piece of history.
