Flash flood warning canceled as heavy rainfall ends; flood watch also canceled for Kauaʻi and Niʻihau

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has canceled the flash flood warning that was in effect for nearly the entire island of Kauaʻi as heavy rainfall has ended.

Runoff levels are still elevated but will recede during the next several hours.

Kauaʻi County reported earlier today that portions of Maʻalo Road in Līhuʻe and Hauaʻala Road in Keapana Valley are closed because of flooding.  

The following solid waste services are also closed because of the weather: 

• Kekaha Landfill.
• Green waste services at the Līhuʻe and Kapaʻa transfer stations,
• Kauaʻi Community Recycling Services HI5 Redemption Center in Kekaha.

Maʻalo Road will remain closed until Sunday morning, Feb. 19, because of heavy ponding; all other roadways are now open. Solid waste services are expected to resume Sunday as well.

The Hawai’i Department of Transportation reported just before noon that traffic signals at the intersection of Kūhiō Highway and Kuamoʻo Road, between Hanamāʻulu and Kapaʻa, are out because of flooding. Motorists are urged to use caution through the intersection and treat it as an all-way stop. Repairs will be made after flooding recedes.

The National Weather Service also canceled a flood watch that was in effect for the entire state, including Kauaʻi and Niʻihau through this afternoon as the threat of flash flooding has ended, except for the Big Island and Maui.

And a high surf advisory that was in effect for the state’s east-facing shores was canceled, as advisory level surf is no longer expected.
