Lane closure in Kapaʻa from Jan. 9-13 for new roundabout construction
A portion of Kawaihau Road and Pelehu Road in Kapaʻa will be closed from Jan. 9 to 13, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., according to the Kauaʻi County Department of Public Works and Grace Pacific.
The one-lane closure and detours for Pelehu Road and Kawaihau Road are necessary for clearing and grubbing, roadway excavation and sidewalk construction. Please note that Kawaihau Road will experience temporary traffic shifts and road narrowing.
Pelehu Road will be closed from Kawaihau Road to Nunu Road. This is planned to be a week-long closure if weather and other factors permit. Traffic is limited for residents in the closed roadway area. “Local traffic only” signs will be installed to inform motorists.
For motorists who are on or using Pelehu Road to get onto Kawaihau Road, Nunu Road will be used as a detour. Additionally, barriers will be installed that restrict traffic onto Pelehu Road as motorists turn in from Kawaihau Road.
Motorists are advised to expect brief and occasional delays. Please exercise caution and drive slowly when commuting though the work area.
A peanut-shaped roundabout is being constructed with sidewalks, paved shoulders and various other roadway improvements to help improve the safety and operations of the 5-way intersection of these three roads and for people using multiple modes to travel efficiently and safely through Kawaihau Road, Hau’a’ala Road and Mailihuna Road.
This area contains St. Catherine’s School/Church, Kapaʻa High School, Kapaʻa Elementary School, Mahelona Hospital and Gore Park.
The project is estimated for completion in July 2023.
Dates and times are subject to change depending on weather and other factors.
