The National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for north- and west-facing shores of Kauaʻi, Niʻihau, Oʻahu and Molokaʻi and for north-face shores of Maui until 6 p.m. on Dec. 24.

Surf is forecast to build to 18 to 22 feet along north-facing shores and 12 to 16 feet along west-facing shores Friday, lowering slightly on Saturday.

Overlapping northwest swells will maintain elevated surf into the weekend. As the current northwest (330 degrees) swell fades, a new, large northwest (310 degrees) swell will fill in Friday and peak Friday night, maintaining advisory level surf conditions.

Yet another similarly-sized northwest swell (310 degrees) is anticipated over the weekend, which will likely require a further extension of the advisory.

Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous.

Head all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t go out.
