Surf is up: Dangerously large breaking waves of 30 to 40 feet for Kaua’i and Ni’ihau

Officials with the Ocean Safety Bureau advise no swimming at beaches north of Mola‘a Bay, due to hazardous ocean conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning for north- and west-facing shores of Kaua’i, Ni’ihau, O’ahu and Moloka’i, and north-facing shores of Maui until 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Dangerously large breaking waves of 30 to 40 feet are forecast.

The very strong breaking waves and powerful currents can impact coastal properties, infrastructure and vulnerable coastal roadways.

Powerful longshore and rip currents will be present at most beaches. Waves breaking in channel entrances may make navigating the channels dangerous.

Stay away from the shoreline along the affected coasts. Be prepared for road closures. Postpone entering or leaving channels affected by the high surf until the surf subsides.

The National Weather Service also has issued a high-wind advisory for Kaua’i, Ni’ihau and the other Hawaiian Islands until 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20. West winds of 20 to 30 mph, with localized gusts of more than 45 mph are forecast.

Winds this strong can tear off shingles, knock down tree branches, blow away tents and awnings and make it difficult to drive, especially for drivers of high-profile vehicles.

Watch out for falling tree branches when walking or driving. Make sure tents and awnings are secure or take them down. Be prepared for power outages.
