High surf advisory in effect for west-facing shores of Kauaʻi, Niʻihau

Update: The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the high surf advisory in effect for west-facing shores of Niʻihau and Kauaʻi until 6 a.m. Monday.

Original story: A northwest swell is generating surf of 8-12 feet along west-facing shores of Niʻihau and Kauaʻi, prompting the National Weather Service in Honolulu to issue a high surf advisory for those areas of the two islands.

The advisory level surf is expected through this afternoon. The high surf advisory is in effect until 6 p.m.

Impacts are expected to be moderate, with strong breaking waves and strong currents making swimming dangerous. Heed all advice from ocean safety officials — when in doubt, don’t go out.
