The first project begins March 21. PC: County of Kaua’i

Road work will close portions of Po‘ipū Road in March and April for a pair of projects, the County of Kaua‘i announced.

Po‘ipū Road, from Kōloa Road to Waikomo Road, in Kōloa will be closed March 21 and March 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The closure is necessary for road resurfacing work.

The traffic plan in the area will include the following closures and detours:

The first project on Po‘ipū Road will close the road to southbound traffic between Kōloa Road and Waikomo Road. Only northbound traffic will be allowed through the work zone at this time.

To bypass the closure, motorists traveling southbound from Kōloa Road may take either Weliweli Road and Waikomo Road or Ala Kalanikaumaka and Lopaka Paipa Boulevard.

During school drop-off times, both lanes will be open. Crews will shut down southbound traffic at 8:30 a.m.

During school pick-up times, only the northbound lane will be open. Motorists coming from the north may access Po‘ipū Road via Waikomo Road and Ala Kalanikaumaka and Lopaka Paipa Boulevard.
Signs and Flaggers will be positioned along the closure to detour traffic around the work zone. During this time, no parking will be allowed in the work zones.

Use alternate routes and allow for extra time to get to destinations.

Other sections of Po‘ipū Road will be under short lane closes from March 21 to April 15, on weekdays, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the county also announced.

In observance of the Prince Kūhiō Day holiday, there will be no work on March 25. No road work will occur during the peak traffic times for school drop-off and pick-up.

The scope of the work includes improvements to pedestrian access to the school, including new sidewalks, crosswalks, and ADA ramps. Safe walking routes for students, parents, and pedestrians will be provided and are shown in the attached figure below.

Expect occasional brief delays. As a reminder, the speed limit is 15 mph near Kōloa Elementary school while school is in session.

This project is scheduled to be complete in June.

The second project will begin March 21. PC: County of Kaua’i.
