Kaua‘i’s new COVID cases has increased slightly this week, but officials say they aren’t yet concerned as the numbers are still relatively low.
During the County of Kaua‘i weekly briefing, Mayor Derek Kawakami said that the Garden Isle’s seven-day case average is about six cases per day, with a positivity test rate of 6%, up from 3% last week.
“This increase is likely due to the Omicron subvariant BA-2, which has been detected her on Kaua‘i,” he said.
The subvariant is not the dominant strain on the island, as it is in some parts of the mainland. Officials said the same protection and safety rules apply for people who are concerned about getting it, and that health officials aren’t worried about a new surge but will continue to monitor the numbers.
