The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a high surf advisory for portions of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau.

The advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, for north- and west-facing shores of both islands.

Surf of 12-16 feet is forecast along north-facing shores, while surf 9-12 feet is expected along west-facing shores.

The National Weather Service says a west-northwest swell arriving later today and through the overnight hours will elevate surf to advisory heights along northern and western exposed shores of the islands.

Residents in the affected areas can expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution.
