High Surf Advisory Extended

A high surf advisory is now in effect for north- and west-facing shores of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau until 6 p.m. Sunday, replacing a previous high surf warning.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, north-facing shores can expect surf from 18-22 feet through this evening, then decline to 12-16 feet Thursday morning and then rise again Thursday afternoon. Along west-facing shores, surf will be 12-18 feet through this evening, then decline to 8-12 feet Thursday morning and then rise again Thursday afternoon.

A series of overlapping northwest swells will continue. The current swell will decline through the night. The next swell will build during the day Thursday, possibly pushing surf again to near high surf warning levels late in the day.

Expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous. Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution.

A high surf advisory is also in effect for north- and west-facing shores of O‘ahu and Moloka‘i, north-facing shores of Maui and west-facing shores of the Big Island.
