Large Earthquake in Philippines Won’t Impact Hawaiian Islands

The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach said there is no tsunami threat to Hawai´i following a distant earthquake.

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake was reported in Mindoro Philippines at around 11 am Hawai´i Standard Time. Large earthquakes in the Pacific Ocean have the potential to create tsunamis that can impact locations thousands of miles away. However, based on all available data, the NWS said there is no tsunami threat to Hawai´i following this earthquake.
