The public is advised of a wastewater effluent bypass that started June 24, 2021, at the Wailua Wastewater Treatment Plant – when a filter drive box broke and shut down the filtering system.

“Beachgoers are advised that the nearby ocean area remains safe for swimming,” said Acting County Engineer Troy Tanigawa. “Wastewater officials are working with the Department of Health to follow all health and safety guidelines, and signs will be posted in the affected area.”

The parts needed to complete the repair are on order, and repairs are expected to be complete in four months.

The treated effluent, currently with a bit of cloudier appearance, continues to receive regular chlorine disinfection and meets R-2 quality standards.  Note that the primary use of our R-2 effluent is for irrigation at the Wailua Golf Course, and an ocean outfall is a secondary option.
