Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation notifies motorists and other road users on Kauaʻi that installation of two raised crosswalks was delayed because of weather and will instead now begin next week.

One crosswalk will be installed on Kūhiō Highway in Anahola and the other on Kaumualiʻi Highway in Lāwaʻi. Both will require single-lane closures.

The raised crosswalk in Anahola will be installed between Ioane and Kalalea roads. Crews will install the raised crosswalk In Lāwaʻi between Piko and Akemāmā roads.

Work was rescheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays through Fridays beginning Nov. 8 in Anahola and then moving to Lāwaʻi, with completion expected sometime in early December for both crosswalks.

The projects were originally slated for Sept. 6-11 but were postponed because of impacts from this year’s severe storms.

Work still continues to be based on weather permitting.

The Anahola raised crosswalk will help the high number of bus patrons safely cross both highways in the areas where raised crosswalks are set to be installed.

There were 380 instances of vehicles traveling faster than 60 mph from April 23-27, well faster the 35 mph speed limit.

A study also found the Lāwaʻi area to have a high number of bus patrons crossing the road where 85% of motorists are known to be driving faster than the 35 mph speed limit.

Traffic-calming devices, such as raised crosswalks, speed tables and speed humps, are being installed in several areas throughout the islands in an effort to promote pedestrian safety by providing drivers a physical reminder to reduce their speed.

Visit the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Safety Improvement Map for additional information about existing speed humps or raised crosswalks.
