Residents can now book in-person appointments up to a month in advance at the recently reopened Kapaʻa Division of Motor Vehicles office.

The temporary calendar replaces the usual 2-week booking window and runs through November.

It comes as appointments for the next 2 weeks at the Kapaʻa office, which reopened Wednesday, were quickly filled.

Priority continues to be placed on residents whose driver’s licenses expired after the Sept. 9 Kāpule Building fire. About 75 new appointments open at 4 a.m. online each weekday.

Staff contacted more than 1,100 residents with expired licenses to schedule appointments.

Division of Motor Vehicles had 16 service windows islandwide before the fire. The Kapaʻa office has three workstations and Kauaʻi County is adding more to expand appointment availability.

“We know this has created challenges for many of our residents, and our team is working hard to serve the community with the limited capacity we have available,” said Kauaʻi County Mayor Derek Kawakami.

Residents with valid licenses or permits are asked to delay making appointments so slots are available for those who need them the most.

Important reminders:

  • Services at the Kapaʻa DMV office is by appointment only.
  • One new day of appointments is added each weekday, about 1 month out.
  • No new appointments are added on weekends or county holidays.
  • Residents are encouraged to try the next weekday if they are unable to make an appointment, as available slots go quickly.

The county is preparing the Gather space in Līhuʻe to serve as a temporary Division of Motor Vehicles location. An opening date has not been set.

Some services do not require an in-person appointment:

  • Renew vehicle registration online or at a self-service kiosk at Western Motors in Hanapēpē, Līhuʻe Safeway, Kapaʻa Safeway or Princeville Foodland. The county is temporarily covering the $2.50 convenience fee for online vehicle registration renewals. Credit card and eCheck processing fees still apply.
  • Request a duplicate driver’s license through the City and County of Honolulu’s online portal. Only exact duplicates are available. Name, address and other changes must be done in-person.
