Kaua‘i County Department of Water announces that for the first time in 12 years some rates and service charges will increase.

The county’s Board of Water Supply on Sept. 24 formally adopted amendments to the rules and regulations for fixing water service rates. Rates were last adjusted in 2014.

Approved amendments

Section I. General Use Rates

  • Section revised to increase service charge rates, amend use charge rates from a rate block to a rate tier with increased rates, and add automatic annual Consumer Price Index adjustments.

Section III. Agricultural Rates

  • Section revised to increase service charge rates, amend use charge rates from a rate block to a rate tier with increased rates, and add automatic annual Consumer Price Index adjustments.

Section V. Private Fire Service Charges

  • Section revised to change wording to correspond with amended use charge.

The increase in service charge and use charge rates is effective Nov. 1. Customers should see the updated rates starting with their Dec. 1 billing statements.

County Water Department rates have not kept pace with substantially increasing costs of operating, maintaining and replacing water systems.

These adjustments align with those of other water utilities and, along with the annual Consumer Price Index adjustments, will help the department keep up with the cost of services.
