Kaua‘i Ocean Safety Bureau officials advise no swimming or other ocean recreation activities because of an islandwide brown water advisory issued by Hawai‘i Department of Health Clean Water Branch.
Beach users should avoid waters that appear brown, cloudy or murky, particularly after storms or heavy rainfall, even when a brown water advisory is not issued.
Stormwater runoff can carry sewage, bacteria, chemicals and other pollutants into coastal waters.
State health officials recommend staying out of affected waters for at least 48 to 72 hours after heavy rain stops as a precaution and allowing conditions to improve.
Ocean Safety Bureau officials remind the public to swim only at lifeguarded beaches and stay out of water anywhere it appears brown or murky.
Speak to a Kaua‘i County lifeguard at any lifeguard station, visit the Safe Beach Day website or call the Kaua‘i Ocean Safety Bureau at 808-241-4984 for the most up-to-date Kaua‘i ocean conditions and ocean safety information.
