Bonifacio Ventura, a 91-year-old bicyclist known around the Kekaha community for his frequent rides, waves and smile, is being remembered by his ʻohana.
On the morning of Sept. 22, authorities say Ventura was struck by a 2018 Toyota SUV traveling eastbound on ʻElepaio Road. The Toyota turned left onto Alae Road and collided with Ventura, who was traveling westbound, according to Kauaʻi police.
Ventura was taken to Kauaʻi Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, leaving his family with a painful void.
Ventura’s daughter, Fely Pacua, organized a GoFundMe where she described her father as strong, active. and independent. She said even at 91, “he regularly worked in his garden before heading out on his bicycle. … These simple things brought him so much joy.”

According to the Kauaʻi Police Department, Ventura was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Police identified the SUV driver as 62-year-old Connie Castaneda of Kekaha. She was arrested on Sept. 23 on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and inattention to driving.
Authorities noted that speed and impairment did not appear to be factors, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Ventura’s family is seeking financial assistance to help cover expenses associated with his death, including medical and funeral costs. The family has also asked those who cannot donate to “share the fundraiser and keep Ventura and his loved ones in their prayers.”
The intersection where the crash occurred was closed for about two hours while officers with the Kauaʻi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section investigated the scene. Police have asked anyone with information about the crash to contact Officer Tyler Henshaw at 808-241-1611.
The family thanked the community for its support during the difficult time and said the outpouring of love and prayers has been deeply appreciated.
