Update at 3:13 p.m. Sept. 12, 2026: Kauaʻi County reports that the wastewater spill from the sewer pump station at Hanapēpē Fire Station resulted from a broken coupler and entered the adjacent storm drain.
Operators promptly responded to restore the equipment to operational status and thoroughly disinfected the area.

Story originally posted at 2:09 p.m. Sept. 12, 2026: Kauaʻi County Public Works crews are responding to a wastewater spill caused by a collection system equipment failure Saturday from the sewer pump station at Hanapēpē Fire Station.
Wastewater Management Division responded at noon to the spill, which was about 1,200 gallons.
Crews will clean and disinfect the site.
Hawaiʻi Department of Health has been notified.
