The Salvation Army Hawaiian & Pacific Islands Division is serving designated Kauaʻi County refuge areas in the wake of Hurricane Lowell’s widespread devastation and power outage across the island.
More than 500 meals have been provided to the community since Tuesday, with plans for a mass food airlift being coordinated today (Thursday, Sept. 10) in collaboration with Domino’s Hawaiʻi and Rainbow Helicopters.
Volunteers joined Hanapēpē Corps officers Majors Bonifacio and Emily Andresto to prepare community meal services by flashlight at 4 a.m. on Wednesday at the Hanapēpē Corps, which sustained minor facility damage during the severe winds.
More than 85 breakfast plates were delivered during this service alone to those seeking refuge at the Kalāheo Neighborhood Center and Waimea Canyon Middle School. Additional meals were provided to people arriving directly at the Hanapēpē Corps in need of food.
On Thursday afternoon, an airlift of Domino’s Hawaiʻi pizzas set to feed 1,000 people will depart Honolulu on Rainbow Helicopter flights bound for Līhuʻe, with both the pizzas and the transportation generously donated by the businesses.
From there, The Salvation Army will coordinate swift distributions to people in need at refuge areas between Līhuʻe to Hanapēpē, with additional deliveries to workers and first responders on roadways and people in affected neighborhoods.
