Personnel from the Kaua‘i Fire Department rescued a 52-year old female California visitor with an apparent ankle injury from Kalalau Trail on Sunday.
Shortly before 11:10 a.m. on Sunday, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 flew over the area and located the hiker with several bystanders near mile marker 5 of the Kalalau Trail.
Air 1 landed at the Hanakāpī‘ai Falls landing zone, where rescuers prepared for a short-haul rescue. When they reached the hiker, rescuers medically assessed her at the scene, provided first aid, and extracted her through the use of an aerial rescue vest to transport her to the Hanakāpī‘ai Falls landing zone.
Upon arrival at the Hanakāpī‘ai landing zone, the hiker was loaded into Air 1, where she was taken to Princeville Airport. After landing at the Princeville Airport, the hiker was transferred to American Medical Response for assessment. American Medical Response personnel then transferred the hiker to a local hospital.
The scene was cleared shortly before 12:55 p.m.
