The new $1.7 million skate park at Hanapēpē Town Park will officially open on Nov. 17 with a public blessing and grand opening ceremony, the Kauaʻi County Department of Parks and Recreation announced.

The skate park is part of a broader effort to improve recreational facilities at Hanapēpē Town Park. Other improvements include a resurfaced basketball court, a recently installed playground and a Portland Loo, a single-user, unisex public restroom.

The new park also was built to accommodate the growing numbers of skateboarders on Kauaʻi.

Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami said the project holds special significance as his time in office draws to a close.

“Projects like this are about more than building facilities,” he said in a press release. “They are about creating places where our keiki, families, and neighbors can come together, stay active, and build lasting connections.”

He specifically recognized Pacific Concrete Cutting & Coring, Kauaʻi Skate ʻOhana, the County Council and others who contributed to the project.

PBR Hawaiʻi & Associates designed the skate park, with support from sub-consultants Mears Design Group, Kauaʻi Civil, Geolabs and Dreamland Skateparks.

The county also acknowledged the contributions of community advocates, local businesses and organizations that supported the project and skateboarding on Kauaʻi. Those supporters include Captain Andy’s Sailing Adventures, Hanalei Surf Company and Aloha Exchange.

The public blessing and grand opening ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
