Kauaʻi County Housing Agency acquired 155 acres of vacant land in Līhuʻe for future development of affordable housing, marking another significant step toward expanding housing opportunities for Garden Isle residents.

The property was purchased for $3.7 million from Grove Farm Properties and based on preliminary assessments is expected to accommodate about 400 to 500 new homes.

It will be the county’s fourth master-planned affordable housing subdivision, adding to ongoing efforts to create permanently affordable homeownership opportunities for Kauaʻi working families.

“Every opportunity to create more housing brings us one step closer to helping local families put down roots and build their future here on Kaua‘i,” said Kaua‘i County Mayor Derek Kawakami.

The mayor added, however, that while this property has potential to provide hundreds of new homes, it’s important to plan thoughtfully and listen to the community as what comes next takes shape.

“Our goal is to create a neighborhood that serves our residents for generations to come,” Kawakami said.

A community-based master planning process will help shape the future development and allow the county housing agency to take a closer look at the site’s opportunities and constraints while gathering community input to help determine the number and types of homes, amenities and other features that could be incorporated into the subdivision.

The master planning process will help establish a more detailed vision for the property and guide future decisions.

Timelines for the planning process and subsequent development are not yet determined.

Additional information, including announcements about upcoming community meetings, will be shared as it becomes available.
