Volunteers with Surfrider Kauaʻi recently teamed up with 56 students and others from Alakaʻi O Kauaʻi to clean up a beach in East Kauaʻi.

The Kōloa charter school sent 45 first- and fourth-graders and 11 adults to lend a hand at Nukoliʻi Beach Park outside Līhuʻe. Members of the Alakaʻi O Kauaʻi cohort and nonprofit together removed a total of 235 pounds of mostly marine debris during the day of service.

“Mahalo to Alakaʻi O Kauaʻi students, teachers and families!” said Surfrider Kauaʻi in its recent email newsletter.

Keiki also participated in an outdoor classroom, with educational games and activities, and students collected data for Surfrider’s marine debris spreadsheet. The community science project began in 2013.

Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources joined the cleanup crew, too.
