A new tropical storm has developed south and east of Hawaiʻi, but fortunately this time it won’t be coming anywhere close.

National Hurricane Center forecasters in Miami began Friday issuing advisories for Tropical Storm Pena, which as of 5 p.m. that evening was located about 620 miles south-southeast of South Point on the Big Island.
The storm had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and was moving west at 12 mph.
“Pena is expected to stay well to our south and not directly impact Hawaiʻi,” said forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Honolulu. “However, it will enhance trade winds and contribute to potential wind advisory conditions across typically windier areas.”
Brief heavy showers also were possible through Friday night, though a flood watch was not anticipated.
