Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) survey in November will assess impacts from Hurricane Lowell and ongoing recovery needs.
From Nov. 16-20, survey teams will go door to door in 30 randomly selected census blocks. Seven homes within each block will be systematically selected for a total of 210 attempted household surveys.
“The CASPER survey will help to inform the County of Kauaʻi’s continued recovery efforts related to Hurricane Lowell,” said Solomon Kanoho, local disaster recovery and mitigation manager for County of Kauaʻi. “Mahalo to our community for their participation as well as for their continuous efforts to help their neighbors recover from the storm.”
The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and participation is voluntary. All responses are confidential; no names or addresses will be collected. Selected households will be asked about their emergency supplies immediately after the storm; physical and economic impacts on their household; general health and well-being; and any ongoing recovery needs.
Team members will wear vests identifying themselves as part of the state Department of Health (DOH) survey team and will carry identification cards. Selected households can choose to complete the survey over the phone if preferred.
Teams will be comprised of Hawaiʻi DOH staff with support from the Kauaʻi Medical Reserve Corps, as well as the Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency.
The CASPER survey methodology was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to rapidly assess the health and other resource needs of a community after a disaster.
“We greatly appreciate the participation of selected Kauaʻi households in sharing how they are doing post-Hurricane Lowell and any ongoing recovery needs,” said Lauren Guest, Kauaʻi acting district health officer. “The information shared will be used to help guide our local recovery efforts involving county, state and federal partners as well as community-based organizations.”
This will be the 10th Department of Health CASPER survey conducted on Kauaʻi. Results will be shared with the public via a final report. Prior CASPER survey reports can be found online.
