A lane closure on Wailua River Bridge is causing delays on Tuesday.

With today being Election Day, the motorists headed to Līhu‘e to vote in person should expect delays headed south as vehicles are backed up from the bridge to Kapa‘a, because of the single-lane closure.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation scheduled the mauka lane closure on the Wailua River Bridge to remove debris washed downstream that is currently against the bridge supports.

The bridge was previously scheduled to close for paving; however, it is now postponed for debris removal, which is expected to take a week.

The debris removal is occurring nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., with shifts added on the Election Day holiday on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and on Sunday, Nov. 8, the expected last day for debris removal.

This schedule will allow for removal of the debris with limited impact on the Kūhiō Highway southbound contraflow in the Wailua corridor.

During the full closure of the bridge, Kūhiō Highway between Wailua Marina Road and Kuamoʻo Road will have a modified traffic pattern; the Mayor Bryan Baptiste Memorial Bridge (also known as Plantation Bridge) will have one lane contraflowed to maintain two-way traffic on the highway.

Should there be any changes to this closure, the Department of Transportation will update via its GovDelivery notices and social media accounts.
