Single lane closures on Kaumualiʻi Highway begin Sunday, Nov. 1, for paving work, the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation announced Friday.
They will take place on Sunday from 6 a.m. to 12 noon, and continue on two more Sundays, Nov. 8 and 15.
Paving work will convert the area formerly occupied by the grass median into an extended turn pocket for vehicles turning onto Maluhia Road.
The makai lane will be closed on Nov. 1 with the mauka lanes closed on Nov. 8 and 15.
Alternating traffic will be routed through the open lane, and flaggers will help direct traffic coming out of Maluhia Road to Kaumualiʻi Highway.
The project includes widening the shoulder on the makai side of the highway.
To work safely, existing traffic lanes will be shifted to the mauka side on Nov. 15. The shift requires the removal and repaving of the existing centerline rumble strips.
Message boards will be posted along Kaumualiʻi Highway to alert drivers.
