Due to heavy rains occurring over the island, the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Kaua‘i and Hanalei Bridge has been closed due to floodwaters.
At 11:45 a.m., Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicted heavy rain falling over the eastern slopes of Mt. Waialeale with heavy rain moving into the leeward side of the island.
Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour. A rapid rise was also observed at the Hanalei River gage upstream of Hanalei town. Flash flooding is expected near the Hanalei Bridge on Kūhiō Highway.
A flash flood warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads, and low-lying areas. Do not cross fast-flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Ponding, low visibility, and other hazardous driving conditions are expected. If you must drive, please do so with extreme caution.
The warning may be extended, dropped, or modified as conditions develop.
