Due to heavy rains occurring over the island, the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Kaua‘i and Hanalei Bridge has been closed due to floodwaters.

At 11:45 a.m., Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicted heavy rain falling over the eastern slopes of Mt. Waialeale with heavy rain moving into the leeward side of the island.

Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour. A rapid rise was also observed at the Hanalei River gage upstream of Hanalei town. Flash flooding is ongoing near the Hanalei Bridge on Kūhiō Highway.

A flash flood warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads, and low-lying areas. Do not cross fast-flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot. Ponding, low visibility, and other hazardous driving conditions are expected. If you must drive, please do so with extreme caution.

The flash flood warning is in effect until 5:30 p.m. and may be extended, dropped, or modified as conditions develop.

The National Weather Service has also issued a special marine warning for the leeward waters of Kauaʻu until 4:30 p.m. as thunderstorms move east.

At 2:23 p.m., waterspouts and wind gusts of 34 knots or greater are possible about 10 nautical miles southwest of the southern tip of Niʻihau, or 39 nautical miles southwest of Barking Sands.

Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous seas. Small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves. Prepare for gusty winds, steep and fast-building seas, and blinding downpours. Stay low or go below, and make sure all on board are wearing life jackets.

For updates on road conditions and closures, please call 808-241-1725. Please do not call Kaua‘i police 911 unless there is an emergency.
