After being closed for eight weeks, the Kauaʻi County Division of Motor Vehicles’ Kapaʻa office will reopen next Wednesday by appointment only.

The DMV has been closed since a Sept. 9 fire badly damaged the Kāpule Building, which housed the main DMV office and computers, at the Līhuʻe Civic Center.

The Kapaʻa DMV is located at 4750 Kahau Road (Kapaʻa Armory). Office appointment booking opens Nov. 2 at www.kauai.gov/DMV.

The County of Kauaʻi is also preparing the Gather space in Līhuʻe as a temporary DMV site. An opening date has not been set.

Kauaʻi Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami said people with expired licenses and IDs are a priority, and they will receive the initial Kapaʻa office appointments. He encouraged drivers with other issues to use alternative service options.

“If you can renew your registrations online or at a kiosk, please do,” Kawakami said in a news release. “Every transaction handled remotely frees up an appointment for someone who has no other option.”

  • Renew vehicle registration online at mvr.ehawaii.gov/renewals/kauai/lookup or at a self-service kiosk at Western Motors in Hanapēpē, Līhuʻe Safeway, Kapaʻa Safeway or Princeville Foodland.
  • The County is temporarily covering the $2.50 convenience fee for online vehicle registration renewals and sewer payments. Credit card and eCheck processing fees still apply.
  • Request a duplicate driver’s license at the City and County of Honolulu’s online portal at mydmv.hnl.info/hnldl/duplicates. Only exact duplicates are available online; name, address and other changes cannot be made.

Links to online services and kiosk locations are at www.kauai.gov/DMV.

Other services available by appointment at the Kapaʻa DMV include:

  • Motor vehicle registration and title transactions
  • Commercial driver’s license renewals
  • Dealer and bank transactions
  • Disability parking placards
  • Permit and road testing
  • Taxi permits

Customers are encouraged to pay by cash or check. Credit cards will be accepted but card payment stations are limited.

The Kapaʻa DMV will not accept utility payments or sell tipping coupons or Kauaʻi Bus passes.
