The Kauaʻi Recycles drop-off bins previously located at the Hanalei Refuse Transfer Station are moving to the Kīlauea Community Agricultural Center (ʻĀina Hoʻokupu o Kīlauea) at 4045 Kīlauea Rd. in Kīlauea.
Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 20, the new Kīlauea site will accept recyclables from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, year-round. The site will be closed on County holidays.
The move will help reduce congestion at the Hanalei transfer station, support upcoming facility improvements, and provide a more accessible and user-friendly location for residents, according to a Kaua‘i County press release.

Residents may drop off the following recyclable materials at the new Kīlauea site:
- Plastics #1 and #2: Bottles and jars only; no food trays or clamshells. Remove lids and drain containers. No black plastic and no containers 5 gallons or larger.
- Aluminum and steel cans: Rinse out food residue; labels are OK. No loose metal lids or bags in the bin. Includes aluminum cans, bi-metals, foil, pie pans, and steel food cans.
- Cardboard: Dry corrugated cardboard only. Break down boxes and remove tape and strapping.
- Glass: Remove caps and drain all liquids; labels are OK. No light bulbs, monitors, or composite materials.
- Mixed paper: Includes white and colored paper, envelopes, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, newspaper, paperback books, phone books, cereal, food and boxboard packaging, and paper egg cartons. No hardcover books, fluorescent paper, or carbon paper. Remove rubber bands and bags from newspapers.
The Hanalei Refuse Transfer Station will no longer host Kauaʻi Recycles bins, but all other recycling services at the site will continue as usual. Residents may still drop off tires, motor oil, propane tanks, appliances, and scrap metal in their designated areas.
