Kaua‘i County Department of Water joined industry leaders, businesses, community advocates and policymakers Thursday to “Imagine a Day Without Water.”

This national day of awareness encourages Americans to reflect on the vital role water plays in every aspect of daily life, underscoring how clean, reliable water sustains families, strengthens communities and fuels the economy.

“Here on Kaua‘i, water makes it possible for our island communities to live and have life,” said Kaua‘i County Department of Water Manager and Chief Engineer Joe Tait. “Investing in water means investing in our future.”

Water powers everything — from brewing morning coffee to keeping industries running and everything in between — but too often, nobody thinks about it until it’s gone, such as when a main breaks, drought strikes or the tap runs dry.

“Access to safe, reliable water is something we can never take for granted,” Tait said. “Very quickly, we learn how indispensable water is in our everyday lives, and how our health, environment and economy depend on reliable access to clean water.”

“Imagine a Day Without Water” invites the nation to recognize how crucial the need for water really is by visualizing life without it, just for 1 day.

Reliable water isn’t just about convenience; it’s the foundation of public health, economic growth and community resilience.

Most Americans agree that investing in water is essential, according to the 2026 Value of Water Index, with support for prioritizing reliable water access reaching a new high and outranking all other key issues presented to voters, who think continued investments in drinking water and wastewater services are critical to support life:

  • 96% think these water investments are critical for good public health.
  • 95% think it’s critical for the overall well-being of their communities.
  • 85% think it’s critical for a strong economy.
