Magnitude 7.6 earthquake near Panama; but no tsunami threat for Hawaiʻi or the Pacific basin

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck near Panama early Friday, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said based on all available data there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.

The earthquake occurred at 7:56 a.m. While there was initial concern of a Pacific-wide tsunami, at 8:38 a.m. the warning center said “based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected.”

The warning center said there will be no additional updates unless additional data is received.
