Two raised crosswalk projects on Garden Island have been rescheduled to the week of Oct. 5 due to inclement weather, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
The projects will install raised crosswalks on Kūhiō Highway in Anahola and Kaumualiʻi Highway in Lāwaʻi. Work is scheduled from Monday, Oct. 5, through Sunday, Oct. 11, with single-lane closures in one direction at a time from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Anahola crosswalk will be installed between Ioane Road and Kalalea Road, while the Lāwaʻi project will be located between Piko Road and Akemāmā Road.
The work was initially scheduled for the week of Sept. 6 but was postponed because of Hurricane Lowell and later moved again because of weather.
The state said the projects are intended to improve pedestrian safety and reduce vehicle speeds.
A study of the Lāwaʻi area found many bus passengers crossing the highway, while 85% of motorists were traveling faster than the posted 35 mph speed limit.
In Anahola, traffic data collected from April 23 through April 27 showed 380 instances of vehicles traveling faster than 60 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to the Department of Transportation.
Raised crosswalks are among several traffic-calming measures being installed statewide, including speed tables and speed humps. These devices are designed to give drivers a physical reminder to slow down.
