The Kaumumene Trail, also known as Hideaways Trail, in Princeville has reopened to the public following the completion of a safety project by the Kauaʻi County Department of Public Works.
The project restored safe public access to the beach by removing hazards, managing the vegetation, improving drainage to reduce erosion, reconstructing the trail, and installing and repairing safety features. This will extend the life of the trail, the county said in a press release.
Construction began June 29 and was initially expected to take about eight weeks. But weather delays and Hurricane Lowell extended the schedule, with the project completed on Sept. 24.
Because of the popularity of the .3 mile trail to the beach, people repeatedly tried to enter the construction area despite posted closure signs and barricades. ABA Protection, Inc. provided security services throughout the project to educate the public, protect the work area and prevent unauthorized access.
The trail improvement was completed with the support and advocacy of community member Mike Lyons and contributions from many others.
