Kauaʻi police responded to a traffic crash Tuesday morning involving a vehicle and a bicyclist on ʻElepaio Road.
Kauaʻi authorities have identified the bicycle victim as 91-year-old Bonifacio Ventura.
Authorities said a 2018 Toyota sport utility vehicle, driven by Connie Castaneda, 62, was traveling eastbound on ʻElepaio Road at about 7 a.m. on Tuesday when it turned left onto Alae Road and collided with a westbound bicyclist.
The bicyclist, Ventura from Kekaha, was not wearing a helmet. He was transported to Kauaʻi Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The intersection of ʻElepaio Road and Alae Road was closed for about 2 hours while officers with the Kauaʻi Police Department Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing. Speed and impairment do not appear to be factors at this time.
