Kauaʻi police responded to a traffic crash Tuesday morning involving a vehicle and a bicyclist on ʻElepaio Road.
Kauaʻi authorities have identified the bicycle victim as 91-year-old Bonifacio Ventura.
Authorities said a 2018 Toyota sport utility vehicle, driven by Connie Castaneda, 62, was traveling eastbound on ʻElepaio Road at about 7 a.m. on Tuesday when it turned left onto Alae Road and collided with a westbound bicyclist.
The bicyclist, Ventura from Kapaʻa, was not wearing a helmet. He was transported to Kauaʻi Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The intersection of ʻElepaio Road and Alae Road was closed for about 2 hours while officers with the Kauaʻi Police Department Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing. Speed and impairment do not appear to be factors at this time.
The Kauaʻi Police Department extends its condolences to his family and loved ones during this challenging time. Anyone with information about this crash is encouraged to contact Officer Henshaw at 808-241-1611.
